The numbers are out...statistics have been confirmed and children living without a father will be impacted whether we want to admit it or not. The information contained within this post are for purposes of awareness.

It's Official: The Experiment Has Failed. For the best part of thirty years we have been conducting a vast experiment with the family, and now the results are in: the decline of the two-parent, married-couple family has resulted in poverty, ill-health, educational failure, unhappiness, anti-social behavior, isolation and social exclusion for thousands of women, men and children.

Inter-spousal violence perpetrated by men is only a small aspect of family violence. False abuse allegations are only a small tile in the mosaic of vilifying the men in our society. They serve well in successful attempts to remove fathers from the lives of our children. Here are some statistics resulting from that which show more of the whole picture.
• 79.6% of custodial mothers receive a support award
• 29.9% of custodial fathers receive a support award.
• 46.9% of non-custodial mothers totally default on support.
• 26.9% of non-custodial fathers totally default on support.
• 20.0% of non-custodial mothers pay support at some level
• 61.0% of non-custodial fathers pay support at some level
• 66.2% of single custodial mothers work less than full time.
• 10.2% of single custodial fathers work less than full time.
• 7.0% of single custodial mothers work more than 44 hours weekly.
• 24.5% of single custodial fathers work more that 44 hours weekly.
• 46.2% of single custodial mothers receive public assistance.
• 20.8% of single custodial fathers receive public assistance.

• 11,268,000 total custodial mothers
• 2,907,000 total custodial fathers

What does this mean? Children from fatherless homes are:
• 4.6 times more likely to commit suicide,
• 6.6 times to become teenaged mothers (if they are girls, of course),
• 24.3 times more likely to run away,
• 15.3 times more likely to have behavioral disorders,
• 6.3 times more likely to be in a state-operated institutions,
• 10.8 times more likely to commit rape,
• 6.6 times more likely to drop out of school,
• 15.3 times more likely to end up in prison while a teenager.
(The calculation of the relative risks shown in the preceding list is based on 27% of children being in the care of single mothers.)
and — compared to children who are in the care of two biological, married parents — children who are in the care of single mothers are:
• 33 times more likely to be seriously abused (so that they will require medical attention), and
• 73 times more likely to be killed.

The presence of a protector is needed to evade the possible threats that face all children and youth. Young women and girls become more sexually active at an earlier age merely because the validation that a father would give is lost and becomes redefined in the placid cat calls of any male. Young men are highly exposed to becoming acculturated in the feminine rather than their natural male role merely because a model of "manliness" is absent. Some researchers even believe that some males will adapt to the feminine rather than the masculine as a SURVIVAL mechanism in the predominantly female cultures for which they are being exposed and reared.

Recently Time magazine featured an article acknowledging the woeful grocery selections for individuals and families residing within urban areas. Historically, many city dwellers have had to travel outside of their immediate community to search for healthier food options. Lately with the insurgence of returning "White Flighters", grocery chains have taken a more serious look at injecting metropolis areas with their products.

This initiative had long since been put on the political back burner due to supermarket resistence to enter urban areas. However now it seems that grocers are willing to revisit their original stances for the sake of providing for a NEW MARKET!

According to CNN, Studies have shown that brain injury increases the risk of violent and aggressive behavior. Damage or abnormalities in the frontal lobe -- a brain area that regulates movement, inhibition, emotions and general behaviors -- has been linked to violent behavior. A 2007 study from the American Journal of Psychiatry found an association between violence and cortical thinning in some areas of the frontal lobe.

An article titled "At-Risk Need a Mix of Good Teachers, Social Service Help" written by Jay Matthews of the Washington Post bring the story of a young foster care student navigating her academic potential despite her impoverished circumstances. This article is a welcome acknowledgement that many of our children and youth are falling through the cracks because additional services beyond those found within most schools are necessary for many students who struggle to get basic necessities on a regular basis, let alone get to and retain information from school.

The young lady featured in this story is from Alexandria Va. However, where there is one there are many more in Washington D.C.. The issue of child and youth homelessness and aging out of foster care students has been a persistent barrier to a better life. Though there are federal mandates that REQUIRE service delivery, dysfunctional systems and agencies are only now collaborating to begin working toward said service delivery options.

They are children on the margins, easy to ignore. It is good to remember that many public servants, both educators and social workers, spend their lives bringing such kids into the center of life in America. Once they have that opportunity, the chances are they will, like Karen Kaldenbach, return that favor in a big way.

An article/blog posted claims that L.A. Gang Waged War To Eliminate Black People. Upon further review it is highly recommended that the writers of this article delve deeper into the issues that built an environment that pits Latino gangs against Black gangs or better still Latino against Blacks. The incidents reported have actually spoken to targeted non gang related "hits". One such occurrence was against a black man who was diligently doing yard work.

The objective is not to eliminate black people, the objective is to eliminate any potential retaliation. The mores that exist in our "non-violent" world are not the survival tactics exacted by people who make it their business to fight over zones, turf, and the rights to earn more income on those claimed spaces.

Karl Marx, one of the first known sociological theorists stated that society is in a perpetual state of conflict because the prolitariat (underclass) will always compete to earn what the bougeousie (upper class) possess. Thus the Conflict theory was born and remains extremely relevant to this day.

The article as it is presently written creates a very inaccurate depiction of the power of rivalry for economic gain and how the fundamental desire to provide causes conflict between perceived threats, in this case Latinos against the 4% of Black residents that share their "barrio". Though it is quite possible that the initial agenda of the gangs or groups of Latinos was to isolate themselves wholly from the rest of society. It is also plausible that as time passed, the initial agenda morphed into general hatred against Black instead of Brown.

Strangely, there are various Latino cultures that are descendants of African slaves just like those receiving retaliation. Distinguishing the predator from the prey must be extremely gray, occasionally.

The media has been called out on this one! Present all of the facts before assuming that it is a racial issue solely.

INFAMOUS BLACK ARTIST ERNIE BARNES DIES AT AGE 70! R.I.P. to an African American icon who made very visceral statements with the stroke of a paint brush.

Acclaimed artist Ernie Barnes, best known for his unique figurative style of painting and whose work was immortalized on classic television and album covers, died on the evening of April 27, 2009, according to reports. He was 70 years old.

According to his official biography, Barnes was born July 15, 1938 to Ernest Sr. and Fannie Mae Geer Barnes during the Jim Crow era in Durham, North Carolina. As a child, young Ernest would accompany her to work and was allowed to peruse the extensive collection of art books. One day in junior high school, a teacher found the self-admitted fat, introverted young Barnes drawing in a notebook while hiding from the bullies who taunted him daily.

For over 40 years, his art has been admired and collected internationally. His national traveling “Beauty of the Ghetto” exhibition in the 1970s featured some of his timeless works as “Storyteller,” “High Aspirations” and “The Graduate.” His famous 1971 “Sugar Shack” dance scene appeared on the “Good Times” television show and on the Marvin Gaye album, “I Want You.”

According to the Associated Press Bill Clinton has accepted the designation of United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti. His new position only pays $1 and travel expenses to and from Haiti. Clinton wants to give back and make sure that the work he did while in office is not undone.

Because of the Clintons’ marriage, State Department lawyers must approve some of Bill Clinton’s international activities under an agreement between the U.S. Senate and the Clinton Foundation, which works in Haiti on a number of issues including health care, AIDS, the environment and economic development.

Haiti does not currently have a special U.N. envoy, and it is not clear what Clinton’s duties will be. The Miami Herald, which first reported the appointment, said he will be expected to visit the Caribbean country — a two-hour flight from Miami — at least four times a year.

Haitian citizens particularly those living in dire poverty are the intended primary benefactors of Clintons' appointment.

If “Wes,” as he’s known to friends, does not become the second black president, it’ll only be because he chose not to. His story is no less inspiring than his credentials are impeccable. In brief: gets kicked out of school and shipped off to military academy at 12, turns the beat around in under a decade, graduates Phi Beta Kappa from Hopkins, snags a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, does a tour of duty in Afghanistan, investment banks before winning a White House Fellowship.

Yeah. We said tour of duty.

Last month, Moore joined a a panel of veterans in testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the topic “Soldiers’ Stories From The Afghan War” (see video below). We suspect accounts like his may have informed Gates’ decision to remove General McKiernan yesterday — but that’s beside the point. As his Crains 40 Under 40 profile effuses: Moore served “10 months with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan. There, he helped revise a program to win over Taliban fighters, boosting its enrollment from 6 when he arrived to 500 by the time he left, and earning a promotion to captain.”

This brother believes in keeping his hand on the pulse of the people as well. The day that he won the Rhodes Scholarship, Captain Moore became aware of a black male from Baltimore who shared his name who was headed to prison. Though Moore was headed to Oxford, in the spirit of "EACH ONE REACH ONE" ,he connected with the brother in prison, and has maintained contact ever since. The mentorship provided by Moore will invariably impact the lives of others, in one way or another.
If the first black president heeds the counsel of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and creates a Council for men and boys, he’ll undoubtedly turn to Moore, no stranger to the White House (and an Alpha himself). In the meantime, the Moores are laying plans to use Elevate to catalyze a movement — answering BHO’s call to community service with a nationwide campaign. Their idea is to do for youth and service what, say, Diddy did with youth and voting in 2004.

Folks are hating on him so hard right now. There are those who doubt his sincerity and whether or not the brother is campaigning early. Just because that's some old craziness that they would do doesn't mean that others have that same spirit. Moore is about changing the status quo and the nay sayers can either get on board or keep it movin!

This YOUNG BLACK MAN is a total package who has the support and enouragement of a loving BLACK WOMAN. Therefore we give you. . .Moore for 2024.

This movie warrants a 4.5 stars out of 5. It is a intellectual spiritual adventure that is slow in the beginning. Hank's character needed the time to "prove" his intellectual prowess, demonstrating to the viewer his competence to figure out the codes, hieroglyphs and symbols. However, once the chase begins so does the "meat" of the movie. The viewer could do without the very beginning however, it was a momentary inconvenience.

Make sure you get your popcorn or a good meal prior to the movie because this film is two and a half hours long.

Like Rice, Rama Yade landed a federal government post in her early 30s. But France’s Senegalese-born Secretary for Human Rights has upped her profile far more than Condi did back in the late 80s, which has led some to think that she harbors ambitions beyond the cabinet. Yade has the ingredients to get there: ambition, youth, and a physical embodiment of change in a country with hardly any elected officials of color.

Yade is passionate and makes no bones about it. Yade made headlines in late 2007 by openly defying Sarkozy, who had invited Libya’s Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi in from the cold to pitch his Bedouin tent in the grounds of the Elysée Palace on World Human Rights Day. “[France is] not a doormat on which a leader, terrorist or not, can come and wipe the blood of his crimes off his feet,” she told the press. “France should not receive that kiss of death.” Next, she denied the President’s request for her to lead his party’s ticket in the less-than-sexy European Parliament elections. Her punishment could be to follow Condi out of the corridors of power—but even if Sarkozy sacks her for temerity, her fame may still outlast his.

Bearing my soul with hopes of reaching someone who will WORK with ME in getting this thing right

In an attempt to salvage our beautiful culture, this blog has been created.

It is time to get to the point succinctly and matter of factly. WE ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE. We are lost and confused. We have allowed various distractions to overwhelm our ability to think rationally. Children and youth are falling by the wayside while we and those charged with helping sit idley trying to figure things out... if that's even a priority. Churches were once the core of our community, and now it seems they have taken the political backseat. The word is still the same but the workers have literally become fewer and fewer. Education is no longer valued in the U.S.. Kids are not buying into the necessity of having an education. Studies have not been done to survey children and youth who experienced academia during and post Bush Jr....but having him as a role model most certainly did not attribute to feeling the NEED to be educated.

Black women look at their black men with distain and black men look at their black women with lust and distrust. A very real scenario that yet again WE have allowed. 70% of black women are single and raising children of color. The very real statistic is of dire concern. 60% of all women are single and living without a male in the home within the United States! Though it is possible and very probable that children raised in single homes will be well adjusted young men and women, the unspoken reality is that children raised in single family homes are more likely to experiment with drugs, be subject to criminal behavior and activity, and be subject to self esteem issues that could be so significant that sexuality and purpose are questioned.

We can no longer wait for someone else to save us...WE must at long last get off of the post Civil Rights Movement couch and get back on our grind to save OURSELVES! It is critical for us to regain the audacious pride the inspired a MOVEMENT.

There are many action items ready to implement. Creating "Social Rectification Centers" throughout the city and the nation would be a start. In keeping with recreation centers, this center would be one that provides self empowerment programs, strategies, and resources. There was a time when we relied on each other to get what we needed, because no one gave us anything!

The beauty of being human is that there is ALWAYS HOPE!!! The only way that we can turn this upside down, topsey turvey world straight is to work together and to simply WORK WELL!!!

On April 21, 2009 Dan Zak of the Washington Post reported that at a recently held “X Conference”, former Astronaut Edgar Mitchell warned that the inhabitants of Earth would not be able to sustain themselves on the Earth once the sun eventually burns out.

Imagine an existence very much like that of the last Matrix movie or TOTAL RECALL (A. Swartezenagger)- where millions of people are living below surface in sub terrainian communities. Far fetched or necessary, particularly given the current increase in global and environmental concerns? VERY NECESSARY!

An environment COMPLETELY manipulated by man, void of authentic mother nature...a scary thought but one that must be considered if man continues on the current path of destruction that is leaving all known natural resources useless or unavailable.

At the end of the day, the budget that is available will determine how soon or how distant research will be, but somehow it wouldn't be surprising if out of the clear blue, the government announces that Mars in now open for occupancy.

Lest it be forgotten that Regan and Bush had "Star Wars" agendas, so what is floating around out there is anyone's guess.

There appears to be a significant self esteem issue bubbling to a boil in our middle schools. A month ago an 11 year old boy committed suicide because of relentless bullies and now a Flordia middle schooler is sodomized with broomsticks by four of his flag football teammates. This has got to stop!

Thank goodness the school officials responded when the report was made by the victim.

However, Parents must be more involved in the everyday goings-ons at school and at social events. Children and youth are becoming targets more and more and it is our responsibility to make sure that our children are safe and protected.

This commentary is not written by a licensed doctor nor medical practitioner.

As a woman who truly understands that because we are able to “flush” our systems monthly, women generally live longer than men- this mess is yet another means for SOMEBODY other than the folks with no money to get paid. In the process, there will be many women who will experience complications and death due to complications from experimental drugs like this one! The natural balance that has taken God millions of years to perfect, will be disrupted by the hypothesis of man.

There is a silent war against women. Makin women more masculine is the worst way to attempt to silence us!

The drug that promises four periods a year to females is concerning. There is no reason why pharmaceutical companies needed to “mess” with the natural biological workings of women.

A statement that this product boasts is that “There is no medical need for a period”. The source of this “information” is not cited, which causes significant concern. The inability to cite the source, infers that the information is not factual. All of these medical breakthroughs are altering organic human functionality. Did I mention that possible side effects resulting from using this product include but are not limited to stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure and heart attack? Now correct me if I’m wrong…don’t the side effects far outweigh the elimination of a period. And what is the purpose for reducing the amount of estrogen that a woman should have? There is a strong possibility that the onset of arthritis and calcium deficiency will present itself much earlier in women taking this product, as a result of the lowered estrogen levels.

Estrogen during the years that women are supposed to naturally produce the hormone is necessary to ensure that women don’t grow hair, look and act manly. What I am hearing that this product offers is essentially premature MENOPAUSE.

Regular birth control is a trepidation for some because the ability to alter a woman’s menstrual cycle to respond on cue to the medicinal components found in the pill are definitely cause for angst. Now this pill will eliminate the other eight periods that would ordinarily assist a woman in eliminating impurities and toxins.
Another related issue is the injection of young developing girls to supposedly prevent cervical cancer. The long term effects have not been fully articulated because there are no results…the drug hasn’t been on the market nor in circulation -long enough to determine if this mess actually works or whether sterilization will be a tragic side effect.

To all the fathers out there, it’s almost Mother’s Day, so you better start thinking about doing the right thing…Flowers, dinner, breakfast in bed, tuition, something special…

Everyone knows Kimora Lee Simmons as a fashion model, author, the genius behind Baby Phat, President and creative director for Phat Fashions, philanthropist, reality television star, talk show host, top model judge…the list goes on and on. To me, she has been my partner, best friend, consultant, confidant and basically the greatest mother I could ever hope for, for my daughters. I feel so blessed to continue to have such a great personal and professional relationship with her. Every time I spend time with our girls, I credit her for giving them their manners, thoughtfulness, intelligence, beauty and kindness.

A lot of you fathers, if you look deeply inside of yourself, you will find the support system in your baby’s mama, that allows you the freedom to sleep at night. Even though you are partly disconnected from the daily process of raising your children, you can trust that she’s getting the job done. So celebrate your baby’s mama, as I do! I know damn well, I’m grateful for my babies’ mama.

This is extraordinarily special, touching and needed. The reality of our community is that alot of women are having babies outside of wedlock for one reason or another. Raising a child in this world is not an easy task. The least a father of his own children can do is to stop and thank the ladies with whom they created our tomorrow. MAN UP!

Here's the deal world, a tier of woman evolved from the women's movement unlike any other seen prior to the monumental achievement. She has morphed into a stronger lady who requires a man to be HER equal. When you happen upon this classyghettochic LADY, it is strongly recommended that men abandon cat calls, and sorry pick up lines to get her attention. Instead show her that you are in fact a brother that she would want by her side.

It is so sad when men feel threatened or intimidated by a WOMAN's PROWESS. Honesty and truth are compromised in the process of attempting to get closer. Sadly, the male probably isn't aware that this new superwoman has the ability to see through to his soul and know well in advance whether he is fake or authentic. It is quite possible that the male fears that which he has never encountered, and very well does not know how to approach. Thus, part of the reason for this public service blog!

Men must value themselves enough to embody the traditional role of a man when stepping up to the proverbial plate. At the end of the day no matter how strong that superwoman appears to be she/we still need a man who can provide, protect, perform and be a professor for US, the we collective. If on first meeting any sense of insecurity within him is detected, the strong superwoman will either go in for the kill by further demeaning the perceptually weak male, ignore him, or in cases of the catty sister, play him like a fiddle. Inevitably, self esteem among men must improve.

Unfortunately the self help books and self help efforts may not be enough for some men who have endured years of hatred by people that he has never even met...elaboration to follow. If he has endured significant personal trauma during any stage of his life and has yet to overcome the scares that came from the lessons learned-the superwoman intuitively picks up on that pain and immediately seeks safer waters. Get the necessary therapy, treatment, and self love needed to approach the 21st century wonder woman...because baby we will not settle for anything less than the glory and victory that the almighty has embedded within you. Interestingly some of us see it in you before you see it in yourselves!

Now go get em' and find your inner soldier!

WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?

Blacks have systematically witnessed the erosion of the Black family. My mother did not fight in the civil rights movement for where we have arrived (excluding the election of President Obama). Black women have to put on their boots and make it possible for remaining Afro American generations to live to see another day. They , as well as our black fathers- have all but disappeared as well . “Hands off” mentalities have caused our children to question their identities, on every level including their sexual selves, question their abilities, and question their need to exist and thrive.

There aren’t any more models to follow and concepts of love are proving too hollow. The belief that one might as well do what everybody is doing, “so let me kick back and follow” is the driving force behind the demise of our collective fortitude.

The possibilities of children of color to become doctors, lawyers, astronomers, scientists or whatever educable career are doused with methadone tones and set on fire with blazing negative discouragements from “care providers” who don’t want their children to go any further than themselves. If a child is born impoverished there are a whole other set of barriers that inhibit dream realizations. For those parents and care providers who feel it necessary to sabotage their child’s success words of wisdom are offered: DO NOT COVET YOUR CHILD’S AMBITIONS. Disempowering an entire generation of children of color through inappropriate exertions of power creates cyclical brokenness. Mean words have power especially on impressionable children and frail spirits. More specifically, consider how your actions will impact the greater community when charged with the rearing of one child.

The Asians push theirs to thrive. White families buy their children the world and give their all too often bad ass, non disciplined kids the permission to treat the world with disrespect, just because they can afford more. The world is upside down, topsy turvy and downright ready to blow! But we have the power and authority to control our pieces of the issue, by concentrating diligent efforts on nurturing the cultivation of OUR babies.

Gone are the days of Afro American think tanks and brilliant Black thinkers. Nothing against Tavis Smiley and the rest of our modern civil rights “leaders”, however after one book -the talking points become mute because no viable, sustainable action follows. The people who need to read what they pen, often can’t afford to buy both groceries, rent AND a $25.00 book. Or perhaps they themselves are struggling with literacy issues, drug addiction, and materialistic consumption that the “self help” books aren’t being purchased by the individuals who could “benefit most”. Looking for pastors and other community leaders to take the book to the masses is often unlikely as well, for various reasons that will not be further addressed in this segment.

The families nor the media cover what “ viable actions” there are, so the community does not SEE the mini-movements that will never grow to magnitude of Martin or Malcolm following. The media does not acknowledge nor divulge the modern black inventors and contributors-so the people never know who truly invented the hybrid car nor discovered modern advances in medicine.

Marches served the 60’s; however it is time for this generation to be technologically vigilant in fighting against injustices that STILL remain, even if people don’t want to believe or acknowledge that they exist. There is a passivity in this era that is concerning. People are now led by their senses and not by the heart, mind and spirit. The latter were given as a gift to us all purposed to fight the unseen battles.

TAKE HEED: Our fields are withering because there is no one tending them. Weeds have over grown and now the soil refuses to bear good fruit!

FEDS EXPAND DNA DATABASES; INNOCENT DETAINEES

WTF? Seriously this has got to be the most egregious violation of civil rights as well as a definite strike against the fourteenth amendment of the Constitution (link )

That mandates: “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

The New York Times reported on April 18, 2009 that the FBI is collecting DNA samples from those awaiting trial (NOT YET TRIED NOR CONVICTED) and detained immigrants to genetically register POSSIBLE criminals.
“Law enforcement officials say that expanding the DNA databanks to include legally innocent people will help solve more violent crimes. They point out that DNA has helped convict thousands of criminals and has exonerated more than 200 wrongfully convicted people.” It sounds like another subversive measure to negatively label or cause barrier to access necessary services as a form of leverage, or just plain old fashioned censorship. There is definitely a deeper reason for this unorthodox action.

If the imagination is left to its own devises a few possibilities may be evoked. Images of sci-fi movies that use criminals as human guinea pigs for mutation experiments immediately come to mind. Perhaps the very real alternative would be for purposes of tracking AIDS and other transmitted diseases. The general public may never know until, the damage is done.

The issue is the butt of every educators joke. The most common question among outsiders is “Why is that you are in the nation’s capitol, where laws and special operations are exacted and YOU can’t even teach your children?” It is even more disheartening that we endured many things to gain the right to an education!

Perhaps the way things are, are the way they were intended to be…. There were periods in the history of the District of Columbia and within the Black community that awareness and academia were honored. There were periods in our short history in America that men and women sacrificed their very life and limbs to read a book. Spurts of insurgence among the black community have occurred in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and yes the 80’s.

The lyrics of K.R.S 1 , Public Enemy, Special Ed, The Roots resounded of enlightenment and awakening. The power of the messages conveyed by young black poets on the back side of catchy beat spinning from a hip hop rhythm was too intimidating…far too mobilizing. So what do we have now? The one-sided interpretation of who we are as a people being regurgitated back to our culture, as a half truth and our kids are receiving it as gospel.

Black men and women are not very often behind the cameras during video shoots and most certainly are rarely the ones directing. While watching the filming of the N.E.R.D. video, there was absolutely no one of color in roles that were of significance operating or controlling the making of the video. Girls were instructed to pose provocatively (because that is how they see our women). Men were instructed to flash their stacks of money, rings, cars and to grope on the women…again their interpretation of how our men respond to their women. Ironically, no one of color stepped up and said… “ naw we don’t do this when we are chillin with our folks”.

Academia has fallen as a casuality of a war that has long since been against spirit and principalities!

BLACKS HAVE EARLIER HEART RISKS

Interestingly this group of researchers were ALREADY researching Blacks and HAPPENED upon this information.

However, according to the study conducted by , Black people in general often are already predisposed to high blood pressure, low levels of “good cholesterol”, and chronic kidney disease, which increase the onset of heart failure or heart disease. The study did not disclose any information on possible causes that may affect the predisposed conditions, but it is safe to say that the diet of African Americans, stress levels, income and living environments would all be attributing factors.

It is imperative that the collective get regular doctors exams by informed doctors. It is also necessary to improve dietary habits and exact environmental controls (where possible). The latter would include creating serenity when and wherever possible. The new report, published in the March 19 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, is a large government-funded survey that began in 1985

VEGGIES AREN'T AS NUTRITIOUS...

VEGGIES ARE LACKING…. According to the February issue of the Journal of HortScience, contains a report on the sorry state of American fruits and vegetables. Apparently produce in the U.S. not only tastes worse than it did back in the day but it also contains fewer nutrients — at least according to Donald R. Davis, a former research associate with the Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas, Austin. Davis claims the average vegetable found in today's supermarket is anywhere from 5% to 40% lower in minerals (including magnesium, iron, calcium and zinc) than those harvested just 50 years ago. (Read about Americans' Incredible, Edible Front Lawns.)… No wonder I can’t find a good tomato.

It is further debated that supplemental vitamins would be of any assistance in recouping the much need vitamins and minerals that our bodies require. So in essence, we need to grow our own vittles in very controlled environments to ensure better nutrient content in our vegetables, particularly. The impacts have dire consequences. The ability for the body to function properly is largely contingent upon whether or not the body has the proper nutrients to perform. A majority of Americans are not eating properly as it is, and even more are not hydrated properly. The brain must have both in order to work properly. The body must have both in order to cultivate and sustain a strong immune system.

It is critical that our children and youth, particularly have the necessary nutrients to ensure proper brain development and cognition. However, the first steps are to eat properly.

RAISE THE BAR; US PRISON SYSTEM

Government budgets are opting to purchase new prisons rather than use those funds to invest in the fortification of educational facilities. Shackles ( from slavery) have evolved into electronic homing devices strapped onto the ankles of judicial “offenders”. Prisons are overcrowded and breeding grounds for HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis. All of these diseases are “released” into society once the previously incarcerated re-enters the community. A significant amount of inmates are suffering from mental illness and drug dependence. They are often cellmates with individuals serving time for crimes that really should not even be punishable in the context of the level of criminality that exists on the outside of the punitive walls.

In the Washington Post March 29, 2009 Parade magazine edition, Senator Jim Webb (D. Va.) writes a riveting piece asking America “What’s Wrong With Our Prisons?”
“The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 16% of the adult inmates in American prisons and jails-which means more than 350,000 of those locked up-suffer from mental illness and the percentage in juvenile custody is even higher”

According to his article: “Justice statistics also show that 47.5% of all the drug arrest in our country in 2007 were for marijuana offenses. Additionally, nearly 60% of the people in the state prisons serving time for a drug offense had no history of violence or of any significant selling activity. Indeed, four out of five drug arrests were for possession of illegal substances while only one out of five was for sales.”

As expected Black men are disproportionately incarcerated. Webb states: “And although experts have found little statistical difference among racial groups regarding actual drug use, African Americans-who make up about 12% of the total U.S. population-accounted for 37% of those arrested on drug charges, 59% of those convicted and 74% of all drug offenders sentenced to prison.”

It is imperative to counter and further ask not what is wrong with our prisons but what is failing in our schools, communities, churches, and families and how do we resolve those issues first and foremost? Secondly, what is and has been wrong with the government that thought incarcerating “runners”, the “young bucks” at the very bottom of the hierarchical totems of $25 billion dollar drug cartels would be a good idea? Finally, what governing agent superimposed the decision to allow, and in some cases enable- drug import without assuming some manner to make it contribute to overall national “economic improvement” for which it was originally intended to satisfy?

There are sociological ails that can be rectified by regular folk on a daily basis. We have to commit to our children and youth who struggle with balancing consumerism without a moral compass. Being an effectual parent, guardian, mentor or teacher is absolutely the crux of our survival. Encouraging education and creating educational environments that breed creativity, ingenuity and exposure to unconventional careers will steer a young person on a path less traveled. Fathers need to stay close to their children. It has been proven that the presence of a biological male figure largely shapes that child’s existence for the better. The government will never do what we are not willing to do for ourselves!
